Galley Head Lighthouse

Sentinel of the South Coast

Galley Head Lighthouse, situated dramatically on a headland near Clonakilty, is one of the most prominent and recognisable lighthouses on the Irish South Coast. Built in 1875, it stands approximately 53 metres above the sea, marking a critical turning point for ships navigating the rugged West Cork shoreline.

Famously, Galley Head was one of the first lighthouses in the world to feature an electrically powered light, showcasing cutting-edge technology at the time of its installation. Its imposing white tower and keeper’s houses make for a striking landmark against the Atlantic backdrop.

Today, while automated since 1979, this powerful beacon remains fully operational, guiding maritime traffic and offering visitors spectacular panoramic views of the coast and the ocean.
