Lough Hyne
Ireland’s First Marine Reserve
Located in West Cork, just 5 km southwest of Skibbereen, Lough Hyne is a unique marine sea lough and was designated as Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve in 1981.
This small lake is fed by strong Atlantic tidal currents rushing in through a stretch known as “The Rapids.” This constant flow creates an unusual habitat of highly oxygenated, yet warm seawater, which sustains an enormous variety of plant and animal life. Many of these species are found nowhere else in Ireland, making the lough an ecological treasure.
Visitors can appreciate the rich biodiversity and diverse environments (cliffs, salt marshes, beaches) or take the nature trail up Knockomagh Hill for superb views over this fascinating natural wonder.
