Baltimore Beacon

West Cork’s Guiding Light

The prominent Baltimore Beacon, located on the headland overlooking the entrance to Baltimore Harbour, is a distinctive and much-loved landmark in West Cork.

This imposing white stone structure, sometimes called “Lot’s Wife,” was originally erected following the 1798 Rebellion to serve as an essential navigational aid. The current structure was built in 1849 by the renowned harbour engineer, Alexander Nimmo.

Standing tall and bright, the Beacon guides ships safely into the harbour and is a popular destination for walkers. From its location, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the village of Baltimore, Sherkin Island, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.
