A Transport History

Cork’s double-decker bus tradition began early, with the first vehicles introduced in 1902 by the Cork Electric Tramways and Lighting Company.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the Cork Transport Board took over, continuing to operate these prominent buses on many city routes. These early double-deckers initially ran on petrol before transitioning to diesel power.

Today, double-decker buses remain a common sight across Cork, now operated by Bus Éireann. These modern fleets represent a century of transport evolution, featuring the latest amenities, including air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and wheelchair accessibility, ensuring the city’s highest bus decks keep rolling into the future.
