St. Anne’s Church, Shandon

The Four-Faced Liar

St. Anne’s Church, Shandon, located in the historic Shandon district, is Cork City’s most iconic landmark. Built in 1722, the church is instantly recognisable by its distinctive tower, which is constructed of both red sandstone (from the original 17th-century tower) and locally quarried white limestone. This unique blend of materials gives the church its characteristic striped appearance.

The tower houses the famous “Bells of Shandon,” immortalized in song. Visitors can climb the tower and even ring the bells themselves. It is also affectionately known as the “Four-Faced Liar” because its four large clocks often show slightly different times.

Overlooking the River Lee, Shandon remains a must-visit destination, offering magnificent panoramic views of Cork City.
