Garnish Island

Garnish Island (Ilnacullin): A West Cork Masterpiece

Garnish Island, nestled in Glengarriff Harbour, is renowned for its magnificently landscaped gardens and fascinating history. In the early 20th century, Belfast MP Annan Bryce and his wife Violet collaborated with distinguished horticulturist Harold Peto to transform the rugged island. Peto’s design incorporated both formal and informal gardens, expertly featuring rare and exotic plants that thrive in the island’s unique, mild, subtropical climate. Historical structures like the Italianate garden, the Grecian temple, and the old Martello tower add to the charm. Bequeathed to the Irish State in 1953, Garnish Island remains a beloved destination, offering stunning views across Bantry Bay and a truly unique horticultural experience.
