St. Lukes Toll booth
A Gate to Old Cork
This distinctive octagonal toll booth, built around 1880, sits prominently at the busy St. Luke’s Cross. It is a tangible reminder of a time when a network of stations monitored all approaches into Cork City. The booth was once manned by Toll Collectors who collected taxes on livestock and produce entering the City. This system of tolls was finally abolished in 1927. Recently renovated by Cork City Council, the unique structure now stands not as a checkpoint, but as a treasured local symbol and a beautiful piece of the city’s streetscape and administrative history.
