Pooleen Woods

West Cork’s Ancient Oak Sanctuary

Pooleen Woods, part of the greater Glengarriff Demesne in West Cork, derives its name from the Irish ‘An Poillín’, meaning ‘small pool’. This refers to the impressive, deep pool carved out by the Glengarriff River that flows through the wood. The sounds and sheer energy of the water at this pool are truly captivating.

This area is one of Ireland’s best examples of oceanic Sessile oak woodland, rated second only in importance to the Killarney oak. The deep glacial valley and mild oceanic climate create a lush environment that supports luxuriant growth, including rare Mediterranean and Lusitanian species.

A walk through Pooleen offers a profound connection to Mother Nature, showcasing the raw beauty of the river’s imprint on rocks over millennia within a vital Special Area of Conservation.
