Cork Tramways
A Glimpse of the Past
The Cork Electric Tramways and Lighting Company offered a vital passenger service to the city between 1898 and 1931. Services began on December 22, 1898, operating with 17 cars. Early operations were lively; during the first Christmas period, heavy weekend traffic led to minor incidents, including passengers (likely over-celebrating the festive season!) falling from the open cars.
Sadly, the trams permanently discontinued operations on September 30, 1931, becoming a victim of the rising popularity of bus services and the takeover of the company’s electricity plant by the ESB. The former tramway generating station on Albert Road now houses the National Sculpture Factory, preserving a physical link to this bygone era.
