Grey Heron

A Cork Harbour Sentinel

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a large, stately wading bird and a common sight across Cork Harbour and the River Lee catchment area.

Instantly recognisable, this bird stands nearly one metre tall, featuring striking grey and white plumage, a long neck, and a powerful, pointed beak. Their silhouette is often seen standing motionless in shallow water or perched high in riverside trees, waiting patiently to snatch fish, amphibians, or insects.

While they are highly dependent on the sheltered wetlands and estuaries of the region, Grey Herons are remarkably resilient. Their year-round presence makes them a familiar and elegant fixture of Cork’s rich coastal and riparian habitats.
