The Kingfisher
Jewel of Cork’s Waterways
The Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is one of the most vividly coloured and sought-after birds in the Cork region. While often elusive, its presence is easily given away by a rapid flight and a brief flash of electric blue and copper plumage.
This small but spectacular bird is a highly specialized fisherman, diving at speed from a perch to snatch small fish from the water. In the Cork Harbour area, it thrives along the quiet stretches of the River Lee, tributaries, and sheltered estuarine creeks, wherever the water is clean and slow-moving.
Spotting a Kingfisher is a rewarding experience, a true reminder of the rich and thriving ecosystem present within the city’s aquatic habitats.
