The Cormorant

The Dark Diver of Cork’s Coast

The Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a large, dark, water-dwelling bird commonly seen throughout Cork Harbour and along the rugged coastline. With its glossy black plumage and long, hooked bill, it has an ancient, prehistoric appearance. Cormorants are masters of the underwater hunt. Unlike ducks, their feathers are not fully waterproof, allowing them to dive deeply and swim powerfully to catch fish. You will frequently see them perched with their wings outstretched—a characteristic pose used to dry their plumage after a fishing expedition.

Whether resting on buoys in the harbour or swimming low in the swell off the West Cork islands, the Cormorant is a powerful and persistent fixture of the local marine environment.
