Cork City Gaol

Cork City Gaol is one of the city’s most imposing and historically significant structures. Opened in 1824, it served for over 90 years as a major prison, first housing prisoners from the wider County Cork region and later housing female inmates, including many political prisoners.

The building is an outstanding example of 19th-century prison architecture. Its grim stone walls, narrow corridors, and damp cells vividly reflect the harsh realities of the Victorian penal system.

Today, the Gaol has been transformed into a superb museum that uses atmospheric sound effects and life-sized figures to bring the stories of its former inmates and governors to life. A visit to the Gaol offers a powerful, immersive glimpse into the social history and political turmoil of old Cork.
