The Magpie

The Magpie (Pica pica) is a highly intelligent, distinctively recognisable bird commonly found across Cork City and County. Known for its bold curiosity and impressive resourcefulness, it is a familiar presence in gardens, fields, and urban parks. Instantly identifiable by its glossy black and white plumage, the Magpie is especially striking in flight or sunlight, when its tail feathers flash with an iridescent sheen of deep green and blue. As part of the crow family, Magpies build large, conspicuous dome-shaped nests high in trees. While often seen alone, they gather in groups known as a “tidings” or “parliaments,” remaining an unmistakable and enduring fixture of the local ecosystem.
