The Malt House
The magnificent Malt House landmark stands as a monument to Cork’s industrial past. Located on the north side of the city, it was part of Murphy’s Brewery, founded in 1856 by the prominent Murphy merchant family.
The stone-built Malt House itself was completed in 1889 by James J. Murphy, featuring five floors, two of which were dedicated to storing barley. In a modern twist, the building was converted in 1992 to house Heineken Ireland’s head office. The brewery’s historic name, Lady’s Well, refers to a miraculous well situated on the hill opposite the site, linking this commercial enterprise to a deep, spiritual tradition in Cork’s local lore.
