Castletownshend

Tucked into the sheltered shores of Castlehaven Harbour, Castletownshend is one of West Cork’s most charming and distinctive villages. Its steep main street runs down to the water, lined with elegant stone houses and known for the famous sycamore trees growing in the middle of the road. The village grew up around the Townshend family, whose castle still stands at the water’s edge. It was also home to the writer Edith Somerville of Somerville and Ross, who is buried at St Barrahane’s Church. The church is known for its Harry Clarke stained-glass windows.

Today, Castletownshend keeps its old-world character. Visitors come for the quiet harbour walks, the history and a pint in one of Ireland’s best-loved village pubs. It’s a place where the pace slows and the beauty of the West Cork coast is everywhere you look.
