The Viaduct

An Engineering Legacy

The Viaduct Bridge is a magnificent testament to 19th-century railway engineering in Cork. Designed by the esteemed engineer Charles Nixon, this structure was completed in 1849 to carry trains from Cork deep into West Cork.

Towering 90 feet above the road, the Viaduct is notable for its excellent design and craftsmanship. It features elegant steel arches with a 21-foot span, supported by expertly executed stonework in the piers.

Although it carried the railway until 1961 and is now disused, it remains a proud and beautiful landmark, showcasing the durable artistry of Ireland’s industrial past.
