Fastnet Lighthouse

Standing alone on a rock about 13 km off the coast of West Cork, Fastnet Lighthouse is the most southerly point of Ireland and one of the most famous lighthouses in the world. The granite tower was completed in 1904 to replace an earlier cast-iron light. It was built from more than 2,000 interlocking blocks, each cut to fit precisely against the others so the tower could withstand the full force of the Atlantic.

For thousands of emigrants sailing to America, the Fastnet was their last sight of home, which earned it the name “Ireland’s Teardrop.” Today it is a landmark for sailors and the turning point of the famous Fastnet Race. It remains a symbol of endurance on the wild West Cork coast.
